If your tap water comes from Lake Belton and you've noticed an earthy smell lately, you're not alone. But officials say it's nothing to worry about.

The City of Belton said in a press release Wednesday that the smell is a temporary side-effect of high inflows and outflows due to recent rains. The motion caused by these flows has stirred up odor causing constituents in the lake, but regular testing has confirmed that the water is safe for consumption.

Bell County Water Control Improvement District No. 1, which provides water services to Belton, says the Lake Belton plant continues to meet the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regulations.
