Temple Daily Telegram said it best in their article back in 2012:

The deserted Maxdale Bridge southwest of Killeen looks like the perfect setting for a plethora of ghost stories.

The Maxdale Bridge, which is now blocked off so vehicles can't ride on it, has tons of haunted tales behind it. Recently myself and abandoned structures cohort Aaron Savage drove our vehicle out to Killeen where we walked on the ratty bridge and saw for ourselves.

Now during the day, it was a beautiful sight to see (see photo gallery). But there are multiple rumors swirling around Bell County - one of my favorites (and most creepy) is the rumor that you park your car towards the entrance of the bridge, honk your horn and then all of a sudden you'll see breathing against your car windows from the outside. I have not tried this because if it's true, I don't know what I'd do. It's also illegal to walk on the bridge at night as it borders on private property

The steel truss bridge built in 1913 in Maxdale is said to be the site where a man hanged himself after being unable to save his girlfriend's life who drowned in the river below (Lampasas River).

Another story details the accident where a school bus filled with children were killed - which is where the breathing after honking your horn tale comes in.

The bridge became a historic Texas landmark in 1990.

Sixty-nine percent of people voted that this is a legit haunted location on www.hauntedplaces.org.

One of my favorite accounts (and there were quite a few) on the site was this one:

There are numerous stories pertaining to Maxdale.
I’ve heard the stories about the drunk bus driver and the children. The old caretaker, The witch. The phantom pick-up truck driver. Also of the satanic rituals that happen out there. I’ve been witness to a group of 10-20 people coming out of the darkness of the bridge and scared the pants off my bestfriend and co-founder of the BCGH and myself. I’ve had my hair braided, had the children push the car away from the bridge, upon inspecting the vehicle we found fingerpainting type words in the dirt on the car that said “—— was here” we couldn’t ever figure out the name, caught pictures and had a incident where my sister, her ex and I all almost fell into the same flash back. Very creepy stuff. Most definitely haunted. And my favorite place to be.
