The one-and-a-half minute stop-motion film “A Boy And His Atom” was created by manipulating carbon atoms on a copper surface using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope, or STM. The project is part of IBM’s continuing research into the possibility of increasing computer storage density by manipulating particles at the atomic level.

The fun little movie, which you can watch below, has been certified by Guinness World Records as the smallest movie ever created. It probably won’t be up for an Oscar next year, but for science geeks it’s definitely 2013’s Best Picture!
