Buses of evacuees from Brazoria county were headed to Bell County Sunday after flooding along the Brazos River forced residents out of their homes.

At a press conference, Bell County Judge Jon Burrows and Bell County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Harmon said buses fitted with tracking devices would carry up to 50 people at a time to various shelters in Temple, Belton, Harker Heights, and Killeen. The tracking devices were meant to ensure the safety of the vehicles, which were expected encounter obstacles and road closures along the way.

When we called to ask if area shelters were accepting donations, we were told that they were not accepting them Sunday night, but they are in need of volunteers. However, officials are asking that people wishing to help call ahead so that centers are not overwhelmed.

If you would like to volunteer at area shelters, please call (254) 933-5556. If you call overnight, you will reach a voicemail service. Leave your information and they will call you back.
