The father of country superstar Clint Black has died. G.A. Black left his family shocked and saddened when he chose to "end his own suffering" on Sunday (Dec. 2). He was 78 years old.

According to a press release, family members believe that the loss of his wife, Mary Lou, and his declining health led to his untimely, unexpected death.

“Our family is devastated by this news,” Black says. “We are still in the beginning stages of preparations to honor our father, and at this time, we respectfully ask for privacy until we have had the opportunity to fully process what’s transpired over the last 48 hours.”

A representative for the singer says that Black's father's autopsy has not yet been completed, but it appears the death was a suicide. G.A. Black had not given his family any indication that he might take his own life.

Clint has since canceled his performance for this Saturday at BonefireJam in Jay, Fla. as a result of the tragedy. In addition to Clint, G.A. is survived by sons Mark, Brian and Kevin.
