A 79-year-old man was in custody Wednesday morning after police say he hit Houston Officer Nestor Garcia while driving drunk.

24-year-old officer Nestor Garcia was hit while conducting a traffic stop on Highway 59, dragged a short way by the vehicle, and severely injured.

Officer Garcia was standing between two parked police vehicles when 79-year-old Robert Zimmerman drove right on through the parked cruisers striking the officer. According to KHOU, he has been charged with intoxication assault of a public servant.

KHOU says Officer Garcia has made it through surgery but remains in critical condition. He suffered a head wound, abdominal injuries, and fractures. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and fellow officers.
