Eric Church is a giver in more ways than one. In addition to the gift of music, the country star has also given back to his home state of North Carolina, and regions across the world, through Chief Cares, a nonprofit founded by him and his wife Katherine.

Church continued his benevolent efforts on Oct. 22 with a $1 million donation to JDFR, an organization that helps fight type 1 diabetes, a disease that has had a personal impact on the singer. His mother, Rita, has battled the illness, which prompted Church and his wife to surprise the audience at the JDFR Hope Gala in Charlotte, N.C., where his parents were receiving recognition for their contributions with the Living and Giving Award.

"I can't think of a more fitting occasion to make Chief Cares' largest donation than in honor of my mother and her battle with type 1 diabetes," says Church in a press release.

Chief Cares was founded in 2013 and has provided aid from Tennessee to as far as Nepal, funding a variety of causes including education and no-kill animal shelters. In addition to the generous $1 million donation made to JDFR, Chief Cares has also impacted regions across Haiti that have been devastated by Hurricane Matthew, with the nonprofit assisting more than 500 families in need.

Church recently released a new single, “Kill a Word,” off his latest critically-acclaimed album Mr. Misunderstood,  which also includes the No. 1 hit, “Record Year.”
