CENTRAL TEXAS FAMILY VIOLENCE TASK FORCE AND THE CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER OF CENTRAL TEXAS TO HOST BE ONE WITH COURAGE CONFERENCE TO HELP CHANGE THE WAY WE SEE, TALK ABOUT AND INVESTIGATE FAMILY VIOLENCE.

 

It is estimated that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men are affected by family violence.  Did you know that 74% of all Texans have themselves, a family member or friend have experienced some form of domestic violence?  In 2010, 3 Bell County women died as a result of domestic violence.

 

I in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be a victim of sexual abuse by the age of 18. In Bell and Coryell counties, 1,217 children were confirmed victims of child abuse and/or neglect in 2011.

 

The Central Texas Family Violence Task Force feels a responsibility to educate and raise awareness in our community about this epidemic.  The Be the One With Courage conference will reach out to local community members, educators, mental health professionals, law enforcement and many other professionals working in the field of family violence. The conference highlight will be a Bell County homicide Case study, Lou Tretter: The Hidden Secret.  This case study offers an overview of the investigation into the hidden secret of Lou Tretter’s life and will further discuss how law enforcement, forensic nurses, medical professionals, and prosecutors pursued justice for one of the many victims of domestic violence in Texas.

 

The conference will also offer various break-out sessions in the afternoon which will address current issues in domestic violence, child pornography, the co-occurrence of domestic violence and child abuse, dealing with children who witness violent crime and the Texas Council on Family Violence will offer Ethics.

 

The day will wrap up with a Key Note address by Jan Edgar Langbein.  Ms. Langbein serves as the Executive Director of the Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas, Texas and for more than 20 years has been an activist in efforts to end family violence.  Ms. Langbein co-founded the annual International on Crimes Against Women with advanced practices of investigation and prosecution bringing together law enforcement, advocates, prosecutors and forensic medical professionals.  In 2009, Ms. Langbein concluded a Presidential Appointment as Senior Policy Advisor to the Director of the United States Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women.  She is the recipient of numerous awards for her leadership and community service including the Mary Harriman Community Leadership Award, Woman of Distinction Award, Woman’s Advocacy Award, Southern Methodist University’s Profiles in Leadership Award, George Washington Honoree Medal and the Dallas Bar Association Liberty Bell Award.
