Central Texas College (CTC) kicks off Red Ribbon Week on Monday, October 27.

All activities are free and open to the public.

The entire week will be dedicated to reminding students of the dangers of drug and alcohol use through several campus events and awareness activities. Throughout the week, students can receive materials and information about the dangers of drugs and alcohol as well as participate in a variety of activities to further emphasize the message. A distracted driving simulator will be available which will offer students an on-hands experience of driving while texting or experiencing other distractions.

The opening ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. October 27 in the Anderson Campus Center (Bldg. 156). Guest speakers for the ceremony include Tori Lineberry, program coordinator – Texas RED program, and Reita Hill of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). In addition, CTC Campus police will present campus policies against the use of drugs and alcohol on campus.

On October 27-29, CTC will also offer students the use of a DUI simulator in which students can “drive” using the aid of a computer which simulates impaired driving. Campus police officers will also hold demonstrations of field sobriety tests using impairment “drunk goggles” which simulates various levels of intoxication. Students will wear the goggles while maneuvering a pedaled vehicle through a series of traffic cones or while walking a straight line.

During the weeklong activities, information tables and mini workshops will be provided by the Fort Hood Army Substance Abuse Program, MADD and the CTC student Mental Health Club. Each will provide information on the dangers of chemical dependency, the ill-effects of alcohol, marijuana, prescription drug abuse and other illegal narcotics. Central Texas Support Service HIV Testing and Education will also offer free and confidential HIV testing. Students in the CTC Mental Health Club also tied red ribbons throughout campus as a constant reminder for students to be drug and alcohol-free.
