Four people are safe but without a home after smoke and flames damaged their home in Temple Friday night.

Temple firefighters were dispatched to a single-story wood house in the 700 block of North 1st St. at 8:14 PM.

When they arrived, they saw flames issuing from the back of the home and began searching for occupants. Fortunately, no one was home. Two dogs were in the home when the fire began, but neighbors were able to rescue them. Neighbors also alerted the absent occupants, who arrived at the scene a short time later.

The scene of the fire was cleared at 10:54 PM. Fire officials say the rear porch, a bedroom, and the attic of the home received fire damage. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday.
