When someone takes on two professions because they want to make a difference and help people in this chaotic world, it's important to take notice. These people generally don't want the spotlight, but those are the kind of people who set an example for the rest of society to follow in suit. That's why our Hometown Hero in August is Jared Koppes, a full-time Killeen firefighter/paramedic, medic certification instructor at Central Texas College and teacher at the Fire Academy in Killeen.

Why does he spend so much of his time helping teenagers learn how to realize and achieve their dreams of helping their community? The answer is simple for Jared:

I love to help people and I know what it can do for a someone who has the same desire.

"Plus, I when I retire I want to make sure someone is ready to take my position," he added jokingly.

Jared has worked in the EMS and fire field for over 12 years, ever since he moved out to Fort Hood from California while on assignment. After four years in the military, he became a firefighter.

A single father of two boys, Caleb and Chase, he cherishes his time with his family. His colleague who nominated him, Jacob Williams said, "He is not only there for them in everyday life, he is also there for the entire Killeen community."

Thank you Jared Koppes by being a Hometown Hero in Killeen. Keep up the fantastic work!
