The first baby born in Bell County in 2014 is currently being monitored in an ICU as he battles an infection.

Fisher Alan Newman was born at 12:16 a.m. Wednesday at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center. Since birth, he’s been undergoing treatment in the center’s neonatal intensive care unit to help with labored breathing. His oxygen levels and respirator breathing have so far been too low for him to be taken off a breathing machine.

Doctors diagnosed the newborn with E. Coli shortly after his birth and suspect the infection passed through the placenta during his mother’s pregnancy.

Fisher’s mother and father are first time parents and haven’t been able to hold him since shortly after his delivery.
