Fort Hood Building 42003, the site of 2009’s mass shooting on post that left 13 dead and more than 30 wounded, will be destroyed and replaced with a memorial park.

The building is part of the Soldier Readiness Processing Center, a five-cluster building that has been fenced off since Nidal Hasan’s November 5, 2009 terrorist attack. In August, Hasan was found guilty and sentenced to death. Now, plans are in place to demolish the building in which the attack took place and erect sculptures on granite pedestals representing those who were killed.

Fort Hood spokesperson Connie Kuehl says the Fort Hood Memorial Committee has raised around 75% of the nearly $403,000 needed to complete the project. Officials contacted the families of victims and say they approve of the plan. Plans are also in place for the other four buildings in the cluster, but no exact dates have been given to indicate when the project will begin.
