March 2nd, 1836 marks the day a convention of American Texans met at Washington-on-the-Brazos to declare the independence of Texas from Mexico. They chose David Burnet as their president, along with Sam Houston as the commander in chief of all Texan forces.

Just a few days later the forces of Santa Anna would overwhelm the Alamo after a hard fought battle during which Santa Anna declared  his army would take no prisoners. About six weeks later, Sam Houston would surprise Santa Anna's army at San Jacinto. The Texans shouted "remember the Alamo" and defeated the Mexican forces and captured Santa Anna.

Here in  2017, Texans are getting some good news on the anniversary of Lone Star independence. Officials have announced that Steven A. Austin State Park has now re-opened after almost an entire year of flood repairs! The park sat under almost 7 feet of water last spring, but is now back in business for all to enjoy!
