Police say a Harker Heights middle school student has admitted to fabricating a story about an attempted abduction as an excuse for his tardiness.

Our news partner KWTX reported Wednesday that the 13-year-old Union Grove Middle School student was being evaluated in order to determine if charges should be pressed.

When the boy was late to school Tuesday morning, he told authorities that a man in an SUV offered him a ride around 7:50 AM. According to the boy's story, the man got out of the vehicle, grabbed the boy by the shoulder, and pushed him toward the SUV until another passing car spooked him and he drove off.

Police say the boy provided a description of a suspect that included details about the brands of clothes and accessories he wore.

In response to the boy's story, Killeen ISD issued a statement to parents with safety recommendations.
