I've been to several weddings lately. I guess I am at the age where all my friends are tying the knot. Recently I went to a wedding where the bride and groom asked for cash instead of gifts since they've remodeled their home and already lived together. It took the guessing out of the gift giving which I loved. You grab cash and drop it in a box along with warm wishes for their marriage. The only concern I had, how much do we gift? Do we drop the standard $50? Have I been too cheap? Should I be dropping $100? At most weddings, you get a delicious meal plus some booze to give you the courage to dance, shouldn't you at least cover the cost of your food and booze with the gift? According to Business Insider, the average wedding in America costs over $33,000! Talk about an expensive party!

According to Prosper and Thrive it depends on how close you are to the bride and groom. One bride told Prosper and Thrive that she was shocked that 40 of her 200 guests didn't gift anything. The model was married in Maryland and reported: "Her guests spent an average of $115 off her registry, and most of her friends gave $50-$100."

What do you think is fair to gift at a wedding?
