Russia was rocked by explosions Friday morning as a meteor shower lit up the sky, leaving hundreds of people injured - many by broken glass. One massive meteorite above the country's Ural Mountains is estimated to have weighed close to 10 tons and to have been traveling at a speed of about 33,000 mph when it shattered somewhere between 18 to 32 miles above the earth.

You can see spectacular and frightening amateur footage of the event here. Space agencies say there is no link between this event and an asteroid set to pass close to our planet today, but people around the world will certainly be on edge until it's all over.
