Keith Urban is well-known for his prowess as a guitarist, but the singer-songwriter and instrumentalist is also talented at playing other instruments, as he recently demonstrated.

The superstar was strumming on the ol' banjo at a late-night gig at Nashville's iconic Ryman Auditorum on Thursday (Feb. 26), giving attendees an insight into how he writes his songs using a six-string version of the instrument, which generally has just four strings. The six-string banjo is tuned like a guitar.

Urban's set was part of the 2015 Country Radio Seminar, a yearly gathering of artists, radio programmers and journalists that sets the tone in country music for much of the rest of the year. He kicked off with solo acoustic guitar versions of some of his hits before breaking out the banjo for a rendition of "Somebody Like You," his No. 1 hit from 2002.

He shared the story behind the song's creation with the Ryman audience, saying producer John Shanks wasn't necessarily on board with the banjo at first. He didn't think it was the right fit for the drum machine track he had in mind.

"John had this beat going," Urban recalled. "So I pulled out my banjo. John's like, 'What the hell are you gonna do with that?' I said, 'I don't know; I think this works.'"

While it was different from the familiar hit record, Urban's performance gave a pretty convincing argument in favor of the banjo, bringing the parts from the record to the fore. His set — which ran util 1:15AM — also included a piano-driven performance of his recent hit, "Somewhere in My Car," from his current Fuse album.
