A Killeen child was hospitalized Friday morning after police say he found a handgun in his family’s home and accidentally shot himself.

Police were called to a home in the 800 block of West Kern Road shortly before 9 a.m. after receiving a call about a shooting. When they arrived, they found a 2-year-old boy with a single gunshot wound to the leg. The child was transported to McLane’s Children’s Hospital in Temple for treatment.

According to police, the child injured himself with a .380-caliber handgun he found in the home’s master bedroom, where it had been left within the child’s reach. The boy’s mother told investigators she was in the bathroom when she heard a gunshot in her son’s room, where she found him injured.

Police have not commented on the severity of the boy’s injury.
