After winning the HEB Excellence In Education Award of $50,000, Lancaster ISD is giving its 500 kindergartners $50 to put into a college savings account.

The district, which is the first in Texas to place seed money for it's students, hopes to see each student have $500 in two years.

"We want them to know that they are going to college and that we are helping them achieve that goal," Lancaster Assistant Superintendent Pamela Brown told WFAA.

In addition to the school district, the United Way and the Dollars For College Program partnered to give these kids a start on paying for their education.

"Kids with college savings accounts are three times more likely to go to college, and four times more likely to graduate," said Mark Hamm with United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.
