The search for a man suspected of kidnapping a woman ended in gunfire Wednesday, resulting in the suspect and an officer being injured.

The shooting occurred near Bear Storage at 1215 Baylor Ave in Waco after police received a tip from someone who spotted the suspect's vehicle, a black Chevrolet, at the storage facility.

When officers attempted to approach him, the suspect attempted to drive away but crashed into a fence before opening fire on officers. He was eventually critically wounded after shooting Sheriff's Lt. Johnny Spillman in the leg.

The suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Michael Alvarado. Police say he kidnapped a woman at gunpoint from a home in the 3300 block of Lyle Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. He is now in critical condition in an area hospital and faces charges of attempted capital murder of a police officer, aggravated kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon.

The woman he allegedly abducted was not injured but was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center for examination.

Shortly after her kidnapping was reported, Bosqueville Elementary School was placed on “light lockdown” as a precaution, as the woman has children who attend the school.
