Official Ranking of the Olympic Figure Skating Costumes (Best and Worst)
Forget the throws and triple axles. This contest is all about the costumes.
For as long as I can remember, figure skating has been my *favorite* Olympics sport. It's so elegant and graceful, almost like watching ballet on ice. In college, I took ice skating as one of my mandatory kinesiology classes, and was sure I was going to be the next Michelle Kwan. Unfortunately, I plateaued halfway through the introductory class, and my only claim to fame was skating with one leg in the air. (Which I still bragged about anyway.)
Of all the forms of figure skating, my favorite is definitely the pairs. My jaw drops when I see the crazy throws they execute perfectly, and those lifts are CRAY. But the best part of watching their programs? Without doubt it's the costumes! This year we've seen some over the top outfits, and now we're breaking down the good, the bad, and the ugly. (Including the ice dancing portion as well) Check out our list of the best and worst below!
WORST
This list was hard to whittle down. So many bad looks! After sifting through 34234 pictures, I think I have narrowed it down to the bottom 5. So, without further adieu...
5) Nicole Della Monica and Matteo Guarise of Italy (Pairs Short Program)
Okay, her outfit isn't terrible, but he looks like he is dressed like Xena Warrior Princess. For the record, the theme was 'Samson and Delilah', but he definitely didn't resemble the Biblical warrior as he fell (some might say comically) to the ground.
4 Stacey Kemp and David King of Great Britain (Figure Skating Pairs Short Program)
I'm sorry, but it looks like someone puked up Pepto Bismal all over them. Not the absolute worst, but definitely not the best.
3 Maylin Wende and Daniel Wende of Germany (Pairs Short Program)
I literally just fell asleep while writing about this pair. One word: BORING! Daniel's outfit looks like something your dad has hanging in his closet right now. And her 'costume' was just as boring. Did they ask for their outfits to be the exact color of blue jeans?
2 Andrea Davidovich and Evgeni Krasnopolski of Israel (Pairs Short Program)
Umm was their theme 'grapes' or 'plums'? If so they nailed it. Too.much.purple.
1 Stefania Berton and Ondrej Hotarek of Italy (Pairs Short Program)
I can't even. Banana pants meets drab central. Boring and horrid at the same time.
BEST
This is the part where I get to write nice comments.
5 Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany (Figure Skating Pairs Short Program )
The German duo certainly made a statement on the ice along with their outfits. Not many could pull off that neon pink head to toe bodysuit, but it went perfectly with their Pink Panther theme.
4 Qing Pang and Jian Tong of China (Pairs Free Skating)
I love watching this couple perform in their last Olympics, and this was definitely my favorite performance of theirs, and favorite costume. Set to music from Les Miserables, they performed beautifully, just missing the bronze medal. (Fun fact: the pair has been engaged since 2011!)
3 Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov of Russia (Pairs Short Program)
These two always deliver, both on the ice, and in the costume department. This was my favorite look from the pair, who went on to bring the gold back to Russia.
2 liona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany (Pairs Free Skating)
Liona's Nutcracker costume was breathtaking. Even with their two falls, this was my favorite performance. Alot of that had to do with this costume, and their choice of music, namely the Pas de Deux from the Nutcracker. I may or may not have reenacted their routine last night in my living room while loudly humming the tune.
1 Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov of Russia (Team Ice Dance Free Dance Skating)
I mean, she's the black swan. She automatically wins. But seriously, not only was their performance haunting and on point, so were there costumes. Anyone know where I can get my own version of this?
