Firefighters from all over the state of Texas gathered to honor Waco Firefighter Garth Goodwin this weekend The Colbert Project Firefighter's Ball in Dallas.

A local firefighter paralyzed in a freak off-duty accident was honored in a big way by fellow firefighters statewide Saturday night.

KWTX reports that members of the Waco Fire Department made it to the Hilton Dallas/Rockwall Lakefront hotel for the ball in Goodwin's honor. Dinner, dancing, and an auction highlighted the evening.

The Colbert Project goes back to 2012 when the organization was formed following Garland Firefighter Devon Colbert's accident in Rockwall that left him paralyzed. Colbert was the first person to have a ball held in his honor and each year since then one firefighter across the state is chosen who is in financial need because of illness or an off-duty injury.

Nominations this year for Garth Goodwin flooded the Colbert Project and this year's choice was clear. He has received the most votes ever for a nominee in the history of the Colbert Project.

When the group read Garth Goodwin’s story, it was an easy choice. Goodwin was nominated by fellow Waco firefighters including Jay Jeffery who also serves on Engine #9 with Waco Fire.
