Ronnie Dunn Gives His Opinion on the Direction of Country Music

Ronnie Dunn is a representative of what’s now considered classic, traditional country, but that doesn’t mean he’s not open to change. The singer appreciates the direction country music is going in 2015 — even if that means adding a little electronica. Dunn recently stopped by ToC Nights, where also talked about his song “Ain’t No Trucks in Texas.”

Dunn’s single sounds country in the most traditional sense. He has no electronic riffs or subs in “Ain’t No … “, but that doesn’t mean it’s because he doesn’t like them. He understands that’s a progression that’s happening.

“I don’t mind putting a little sub on the kick and tuning it,” he admits. “It’s probably that same mentality that they used back in the day when they were going to use drums at the Grand Ole Opry.”

“Ain’t No Trucks in Texas” is one of the many songs that Nash Icon brought the legendary singer when he was recording, but there was something about this one that just felt right.

“Icon brought thousands of songs, we listened to them for months just for the first wave of recording, which we are just now finishing up,” Dunn shares. “That one jumped out — it’s a tricky game at this point for me. You kind of have to shoot the gaps, you know. That felt like a really good contender. All the outside writers are writing for the cutting edge of radio and commercial playing, or you’re going full tilt traditional country.”

Dunn will continue to bring traditional country alongside his Brooks & Dunn co-partner, Kix Brooks, in Las Vegas for their residency with Reba McEntire. The singer’s solo album will also feature a duet with the famous redhead.

Sam Alex is the host of Taste of Country Nights radio, a syndicated night show which airs on more than 60 Townsquare Media Group stations nationwide.
