Senator John Carona has proposed a constitutional amendment to allow citizens to vote on whether to authorize a limited number of destination resorts and permit casinos to set up shop in Texas. Voters would also be asked to approve the installation of slot machines at approved race tracks, as well as the authorization of casino licenses for Native American tribes in the state.

Supporters say that Texas is missing out on millions of dollars being spent in gambling-friendly states, and that pro-gambling measures are gaining more support. Opponents say the legislation has no chance of passing and that most Texans are not in favor of expanding gambling rights.
