A family of eight in Temple narrowly avoided serious injury and displacement after firefighters say an improperly discarded cigarette sparked a house fire early Monday morning.

Temple Fire & Rescue responded to the 7200 Block of Airport Road shortly after midnight Tuesday and discovered the burning vehicle, which had already received extensive damage from the flames. Temple Fire Department Information Officer Thomas Pechal said Tuesday that the vehicle was a total loss.
