A fire that destroyed a vacant house on North 1st Street in Temple Monday night is being investigated as an arson.

According to Thomas Pechal with Temple Fire and Rescue, fire crews were dispatched to the scene at 6:59 PM. When they arrived, they saw heavy flames issuing from the rear of a single story wood frame house.

The fire was under control by 8:05 PM, but not before the roof had collapsed. The building is now considered a total loss. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Pechal said fire marshals believe the fire was intentionally set. They continued to investigate the scene late Monday night.
