A woman who crashed an SUV into a local creek was rescued Wednesday morning thanks to an observant Temple police officer.

An officer identified only as DeCruz in a Temple Police Department Facebook post noticed a damaged guardrail and debris along the northbound Interstate 35 service road near Pepper Creek around 3 a.m. When he stopped to investigate, he spotted a Nissan SUV below the bridge and called for backup.

More officers arrived at the scene and found the driver stranded on the opposite side of the creek. Temple Fire and Rescue used a ladder to safely retrieve the woman, who was not injured.
