If you have pesticides, batteries, used tires and oil, and old electronics you're not sure how to dispose of, bring them to Temple this weekend.

The City of Temple, in cooperation with Waste Management, Temple Landfill, Temple Iron & Metal, Temple College, Goodwill, and the Central Texas Council of Governments will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event from 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, October 8 at the Temple Service Center, 3210 East Avenue H.

Citizens of  Bell,Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, Mills and San Saba Counties are encouraged to bring the following items for safe disposal:

-Tile, toilet, oven and drain cleaners
-Polishes
-Ammonia
-Paints, stains, varnishes, paint thinners and/or removers
-Aerosol spray cans
-Pesticides
-Herbicides
-Fungicides
-Insect repellents
-Pool chemicals
-Automotive batteries
-Used oil & oil filters
-Old gasoline
-Transmission fluid
-Brake fluid
-Antifreeze

Residents can also bring up to 8 passenger tires, with a $1 surcharge on any additional tires. (No tires on rims and no tires larger than 21.5-inch rim dimension will be accepted.)

Meanwhile, Goodwill be accepting electronics with the exception of refrigerators and televisions. (The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has information on how to recycle the latter items, while Best Buy offers recycling options as well.)

Temple College will be accepting computer towers and laptops for their loaner computer and refurbishing programs, which help students in need of computers and donate refurbished units to non-profits.

If you have old medications in need of safe disposal, the Temple Police Department will accept them at this event as well. The hope is to keep them from being flushed down the toilet, as waste water treatments plants are not designed to remove them and they could contaminate local water supplies.

The following items are prohibited:

-Infectious and medical wastes
-Biological and radioactive materials
-Compressed gas cylinders
-Ammunition
-Fire extinguishers
-Smoke detectors
-Explosives
