A Texas teenager is dead after pushing his mother out of the way of an armed robber who opened fire in a sandwich shop.

KHOU reports that 18-year-old Javier Flores, a junior at Houston's Cesar Chavez High School, and his mother were the only employees in a southeast Houston Subway around 8 PM Wednesday when two men entered with a gun and pointed it at the woman.

Flores was shot in the neck when he tried to intervene and protect his mother. Despite the severe injury, he reportedly ran to a back room to call for help and was shot again.

The two assailants fled in a four-door, gold colored sedan. Police say the pair robbed another Subway shop half an hour later. Police have released a sketch of one of the suspects.

Flores was transported to a hospital, where he passed away as a result of his injuries.
