2 Time Texan Finally Wins NBA Championship Title
2 Time Texan?
Yes! Texan to the second degree, whatever you want to call it, P.J. Tucker has finally got himself a Championship trophy. Tucker not only played for the Houston Rockets, but also made a name for himself coming out of the University of Texas. This Longhorn alumni has come a long way to finally reach the Pinnacle of success in the National Basketball Association.
Where It All Began
Tucker is originally from the Tar Heel State. He played his high school ball in Raleigh, NC at William G. Enloe High School. A trip to the other side of the country, fresh out of high school, would be the next big step in his career.
Welcome to Texas
P.J. Tucker would go on to play for the University of Texas from '03 to '06. During that time, he received the Big 12 Conference Player of the year for the '05-'06 season. The Longhorns went to the tournament every year that Tucker played, including trips to the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight.
Rough Start
After being drafted by the Raptors 35th overall, Tucker would go on to be released and go play basketball overseas before signing with the Suns a few years later. After developing his craft for several years in Phoenix, he finally made the playoffs with the Raptors in 2017.
Lone Star Life
Tucker signed with the Houston Rockets in 2017 following his playoff appearance with Toronto. The good news for Texas sports fans is that Tucker was just getting started, going on another 3 playoff runs during his second time playing ball for the state.
Then Why Did He Leave?
The 35-year-old veteran forward knew he was running out of time for the elusive championship ring. Needing a change of scenery following the departure of James Harden, Tucker was eventually traded to the Milwaukee Bucks this past season. They made their way to the NBA Finals playing against Chris Paul and the Suns.
The Big Game
Tucker and the Bucks went into game 6 with a 3-2 lead in the series. After solid contributions through the early rounds of the playoffs, Tucker had 23 rebounds, 7 assists, and 24 points through the six-game series with the Bucks. They beat the Suns 105-98 and P.J.
Tucker is officially the newest Texas Alumni to be called an NBA Champion.
