Temple Police Department Corporal Kenneth Lee Sheka has resigned four months after he allegedly fired his gun at a wall during a law enforcement conference in El Paso. Sheka tended his immediate resignation to Chief of Police Floyd Mitchell Tuesday.

Sheka was arrested on Wednesday, September 9 while attending a Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas conference at the Chase Suites Hotel.

According to witnesses, Sheka was talking to a female hotel employee when he began making sexual comments. The woman told police Sheka touched her inappropriately as she walked away, after which she heard a loud bang. Witnesses turned to see Sheka pointing his handgun at a wall. A male hotel employee forced the gun from Sheka's hand when he appeared to point it in the woman's direction, after which Sheka was tackled by other conference attendees.

Sheka was arrested and charged with deadly conduct involving the discharge of a firearm. He posted $2,500 bond on September 9, and was placed on administrative leave on September 11.

Sheka, whose record indicates no discipline reports or complaints, was attending the conference on his own time and at his own expense and was not representing the Temple Police Department in any official capacity, Cpl. Christopher Wilcox said in a press release issued on September 11.
