BLORA Tightens Security After Memorial Day Shooting At Fort Hood Park
Fort Hood is ramping up security at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area.
Security Overhaul at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area Following Tragic Holiday Shooting
Nearly two months after a late-night shooting claimed the life of a local high school senior and left several others wounded, major security upgrades are being implemented at the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA). According to KCEN, the safety overhaul comes after military police reported a rise in illegal behavior at the park leading up to the Memorial Day weekend tragedy, including instances of drivers completely bypassing the main entrance gates.
Implementing Strict Access Controls
To secure the area, military officials have established a dedicated entry control point. Members of the 89th Military Police Brigade are now stationed at the gates to physically manage who enters the park. These guard units are checking the IDs of everyone entering the park.
Other Changes:
- Increased Patrols
- Rapid Response
- Pre-Screening
How Visitors Can Secure an Access Pass
If you do not have a Department of War identification card, a new pre-registration protocol is mandatory before arriving at the BLORA gates. This screening process is designed to keep those with criminal records out of the park. There are two ways to register:
- In-Person Registration: Visitors can go directly to the installation's Visitor Center. You must present a government-issued ID that complies with Real ID standards. After a successful background check, staff will issue a physical paper pass designated for BLORA access.
- Online Pre-Registration: Once submitted, applicants will receive a notification via text or email regarding their approval status. Approved visitors must then visit the physical Visitor Center or print out their official paper pass.
