A Belton man was hospitalized Wednesday after suffering second and third-degree burns in an early morning house fire.

Firefighters responded to a call in the 100 block of Palmetto Street just before 5:30 a.m. Two elderly residents escaped a flaming single-story home without harm, but one man was transported to Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple to undergo treatment for burns to his feet.

The Belton Fire Department, with assistance from Temple Fire and Rescue, had the blaze under control by 5:52 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but crews believe it started in a bedroom. Smoke alarms were present and operational in the home.
