White House Appoints Texas Cattleman John Bellinger to Lead National Screwworm Defense
Efforts to eradicate the New World Screwworm from the United States will be led by a Texan.
Texas Agricultural Leader Tapped by Feds to Spearhead Screwworm Eradication
The federal government has appointed prominent Texas cattleman and food safety pioneer John Bellinger to help lead the nation's defensive strategy against the New World screwworm. According to Fox 44, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced that President Trump has officially appointed Bellinger as the Senior Advisor for New World Screwworm Preparedness.
A Calm Voice in a Stressful Time
The appointment places a seasoned agricultural expert at the forefront of a critical animal health emergency that poses a severe economic threat to American livestock and native wildlife. Bellinger reassured the public that consumers should remain confident in the safety of American beef, saying the use of infertile flies remains the primary weapon for wiping out the screwworm.
A Historic Legacy of Scientific Defense
The battle against the deadly parasite is deeply rooted in the history of Texas A&M University. Nearly sixty years ago, Aggie alumnus Dr. Edward F. Knipling co-developed the groundbreaking sterile insect technique while serving as a federal entomologist. This biological control method successfully purged the parasite from the country in the mid-20th century.
A Group Effort
In his federal advisory role, Bellinger will coordinate actions between the USDA, the State of Texas, and Texas A&M. While the Texas Animal Health Commission continues to act as the primary veterinary authority and the Texas Division of Emergency Management handles structural logistics, the university system will oversee fieldwork, labwork, and cattle rancher education.
Mobilizing Border Resources
Texas A&M AgriLife was ahead of the game, spending the past year getting its ducks in a row should the worm ever make it to the United States. It put together a gameplan that consisted of a dedicated task force bridging its research, extension, veterinary, and diagnostic branches. Following the official confirmation of the parasite in South Texas, university system leadership ordered an immediate, rapid deployment of specialized assets toward the border area.
