Saturday or Sunday are perfect days to take the two-hour drive from Killeen-Temple to the official birthplace of Texas!

It's time for the annual Texas Independence Day events at Washington on the Brazos this weekend. The 293-acre historic site and park was the meeting place of the delegates who met there in 1836 to formally declare independence from Mexico.

It's the perfect weekend to make the trip for Texas Independence Day as the meeting in 1836 actually happened on March 2nd and 3rd that year. So this years anniversary falls on those significant and historic dates.

Kids can add their names to the list of those who have signed the six-foot-tall Texas Declaration of Independence in Washington this weekend and then pose for a photo. Texas Independence Day events take place this Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm. You can find all the fun activities at wheretexasbecametexas.org

 Entertainment this weekend will include Polish dancers, Entertainment includes Polish dancers, Native American dancers, the Mixteco Ballet Folklorico, and brass and string bands. The Texas A&M University Singing Cadets and Aggieland Mariachi band will all be in attendance this weekend.

Kids can also fire muskets and cannons during demonstrations that take place throughout the day Saturday and Sunday.

Washington on the Brazos State Historic site is part of the Republic of Texas Complex that includes a 19th-century stagecoach inn in nearby Anderson, Texas. You can also take a look at the Six Flags over Texas Monument in Navasota. It's the perfect road trip for Texas Independence Day!
