Nothing makes a dad prouder than a straight, green lawn, a symbol of hard work and dedication. But in Central Texas, achieving that green space when the summer sun is beating down is no easy task.

Smart Watering for Deep Roots

Beneath all of the tips and advice, watering is the number one thing that you need to know about grass. Shallow, frequent waterings will promote shallow, weak roots. You want infrequent, deep watering. This will create deeper roots, and subsequently make your lawn more drought resistant. Water early in the morning between 4 AM and 8 AM so you can reduce evaporation, and give the blades time to dry before evening to eliminate the chance of fungal disease. You should aim for about an inch of water a week. You can easily measure this with a rain gauge.

Mowing High for Healthy Growth

Mowing height in the summer is another careful consideration. Slow down and do not scalp your lawn. Taller grass blades (ideally 3-4 inches) provide shade to the soil which helps keep it cooler. Cooler soil means less water evaporation. Tall blades reduce weed pressure and increase root depth. Always mow with sharp blades to produce a clean cut. Torn edges stress the grass and increase vulnerability to disease.

Strategic Fertilization

Fertilization is dependent on your specific lawn’s needs, but it is important. It seems odd to fertilize during the heat of summer, but a light application of a slow-release, low nitrogen fertilizer in late spring or early summer will provide nutrients without creating excessive growth which requires additional water. Don't apply a heavy nitrogen application during midsummer heat; you'll easily burn the grass.

Pest Prevention

Finally, keep weeds and pests from invading your lawn by addressing them before they cause serious stress to the turf. Fescue may thin during the summer heat, making it easier for the turf to be attacked. Inspect regularly for Central Texas pests such as chinch bugs or grubs; if you notice them, use the appropriate means of treatment. Weeds should also be pulled as soon as they're detected before they take the water or nutrients away from your grass.

By following these practices, you can maintain a green Central Texas lawn during the heat of summer and maintain dad-pride, shining as bright as the Texas sun!
