If you have lived in Central Texas for more than a minute, then you have likely found your way in an unwanted encounter with a scorpion. It may have been in your boots, bathtub, or even crawling across your ceiling.

Why Now? The Heat

Just like the rest of us, scorpions don’t care for extreme heat either. July and August temperatures in Texas can often reach triple digits and scorpions are looking for cooler spots. Your air-conditioned home is an ideal living space for a scorpion. They sneak in through the smallest cracks, drains, and door frames to chill out.

They’re Thirsty

Water is another motivation for scorpions crashing your space. They are thirsty. Central Texas summers are dry, and these creepy crawlers are very much in search of moisture. That means bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms are where you can expect to run into these unexpected (and unwanted) guests.

Nighttime Roamers

Scorpions are nocturnal, which means they do most of their roaming and venturing during the night. They prefer dark quiet places, such as your closet, piles of laundry or under your bed. A helpful hint: throw your shoes on the floor, and make sure to shake them out before you slide them on.

How to Keep Them out

Seal all cracks and gaps around your doors and windows. Be sure to use weather stripping around any gaps on windows and doors. Try to avoid leaving piles of firewood, rock or brush near your home. Scorpions love to hide in that stuff. If you are really struggling, call a pest control company. You can also invest in a blacklight. They glow under UV light. Now that's creepy.

While the thought of finding a scorpion in your home is never a pleasant one, they are usually more of an annoyance than anything to really be concerned about. Just remain calm, grab a shoe or a jar and remind yourself that you live in Texas where even our bugs are built different.
