This One Unique Gun Law Is Shaping This Town’s Character
Did you know that there is a state in the USA where you legally have to own a gun. Surprisingly, it isn't in Texas. In Kennesaw, Georgia the local law has made it a requirement for you to own a firearm. In 1982 the city passed an ordinance requiring every household to have a gun and ammunition.
Now the sheriff isn’t kicking down doors for a gun inspection, and it's not really clear what will happen if you don’t comply. Regardless, it is still the law, so if you move to Kennesaw, GA make sure you have a little extra money put away for an addition to the home security system.
Some of the locals do have mixed feelings about the law, though. Groundskeeper Blake Weatherby attributes the town’s low crime rate up to the gun law as opposed to the guns themselves. Meanwhile, Cris Welsh finds the law a bit embarrassing even though she owns a couple guns herself. Unsurprisingly, gun shop owner James Rabun, whose family business thrives in the city is a big fan of the law.
For many of the residence of Kennesaw, GA the law is sort of a symbol of how different places in the country view gun laws. Kennesaw's law was passed as a counterpoint to Morton Grove, Illinois, which banned guns the same year. Whether you see it as a quirky tradition or a cringe worthy footnote, one thing is clear, and that is the people of Kennesaw don't only think that it is your right to own a gun, but it is your duty.
