A Copperas Cove woman has been charged with burglary and assault after police say she kicked in a woman’s door and attacked her in order to obtain a government food card.

Ila Jean Zimmerman allegedly kicked open the front door of a home in the 500 block of West Avenue A Thursday evening and demanded to be given a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program card. The victim of the assault attempted to close the door on Zimmerman and was hit several times in the process. The victim’s boyfriend then assisted her in closing the door, but Zimmerman reportedly returned to the home twice and banged on the door demanding the card.

Police arrived at the home around 7 p.m. and found that the victim had a swollen forehead and an injured right index finger. Zimmerman was arraigned Friday on a charge of burglary of a habitation with intent to commit assault. Her bond was set at $20,000 and she was long longer in the Coryell County Jail as of Monday.
