Country Lyrics That Hit Home For Texans
Country music lyrics are often criticized or made fun. Some of the lines may seem outlandish but if you live in Texas then you know that many of those lyrics are actually pretty relevant to those of us here in the Lone Star State.
Miranda Lambert - Kerosene
Miranda Lambert's lyric from her song Kerosene, “I’m giving up on love, ‘cause love’s given up on me” is a great example. The feeling expressed in that single lyric is not an uncommon one Texans. Relationships are very hard to develop and maintain, and when combined with the busy lifestyle and demands of what all of us experience these days often times it can seem as if people are more concerned with loving themselves rather than giving love to someone else.
Toby Keith - Beer for My Horses
Toby Keith’s line “Whiskey for my men, beer for my horses,” may come across rather silly in some of the fancier parts of the country, but in most of Texas where people may still be around livestock and open land, it's not that far-fetched. I'm not saying that the Budweiser Clydesdales should be drinking the company product, but it wouldn't be the weirdest thing that I've seen a horse do in Texas.
Kacey Musgraves - Biscuits
Kacey Musgraves may initially sound odd with her lyric “Mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy.” However, the meaning is pretty straight forward. Worry about yourself before you go worrying about other people's business. It might be a mindset seen more often in small communities where privacy is appreciated and respect among people is the expectation not the exception.
George Strait - All My Exes Live in Texas
George Strait's line, "All my exes live in Texas," seems to resonate with a lot of people no matter where they are from. If you are from Texas and you still live in the Lonestar State that line hits even harder. Even though Texas is a huge state at 268,581 square miles, when you grow up in a small area, there are times when you feel like Texas is very small too, especially if you happen to run into some of those people from your past on a regular basis.
Garth Brooks - Friends in Low Places
Garth Brooks' song "I've got friends in low places" represents the fact that everyone’s support system looks different. In Texas, strong friendship ties are generally more valuable than who you are socially linked to, and often enough, those loyal friends are often the same ones who show up at the most important times.
Even if you think country lyrics are extreme or silly, in many ways they reflect things seen in real life in Texas. The themes of connection, struggle, and independence convey the values, and culture that is felt all across Texas.
