The driver of an 18-wheeler died Tuesday evening when his vehicle veered off the Texas 36 “Long Bridge” over Lake Belton and exploded.

The crash occurred shortly before 8:00 PM. According to one DPS official, it appears the vehicle struck rubber barrels put in place to protect drivers from the concrete median which caused him to steer across two lanes of traffic before hitting the guard rail on the north side of Leona Park. The vehicle’s trailer remained on the shoulder, but the cab apparently went down an embankment and exploded.

Officials speculate that the driver’s vision may have been impaired because he was driving in the direction of the setting sun. The vehicle was transporting a type of molasses feed. Temple Fire & Rescue hazmat team is on hand to assist in the cleanup.
