Belton ISD Celebrates Milestone Achievements of Six New Eagle Scouts
Belton ISD is honoring six dedicated students who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor obtainable within Scouting America. This is no easy task. It takes years of commitment, leadership, and the successful completion of a comprehensive community service project.
The Eagle Scout Service Projects
Johnny White
As a student at Lake Belton High School, Johnny focused his project on accessability by constructing a dedicated bocce ball court for the school district's Delta program. Going by his personal experience watching his younger brother participate in the Special Olympics, White designed the recreational space to ensure students of all abilities have a place to stay active and form lasting friendships.
Gabe Jones
Also representing Lake Belton High School, Gabe created an eco-friendly rainwater harvesting framework at Feed My Sheep’s Elizabeth Farm, a nonprofit organization in Temple. His project featured a custom PVC gutter network that attached to the facility's barn, to drive rainwater into heavy-duty storage barrels anchored on hand-built wooden stands. The water will provide free crop irrigation.
Landon Casperson
Landon upgraded displays at Heritage Park in Belton. He swapped out fragile, temporary story walk displays with durable metal signage engineered to endure harsh weather conditions. This will ensure that local families can enjoy outdoor children's literature and rotating regional wildlife guides in the future.
Andy Thomas
Andy built a bench and a Free Library at Lakewood Elementary School, the campus he attended as a child. Following in the footsteps of his older brother who previously built a pedestrian bridge at the same school, Thomas designed the outdoor repository to provide young students with easy, year-round access to books even when the campus library shuts down for the summer.
Wyatt McLean
A student at Belton High School, Wyatt formed a civic partnership with Sparta Fire and Rescue to support local first responders. McLean designed and manufactured heavy-duty equipment drying racks, providing the emergency station with the ability to properly clean, air-out, and maintain critical firefighting gear.
Jacob Lawrence
Jacob rounded out the elite group of Lake Belton High School achievers by successfully meeting all rigorous scouting requirements to earn his Eagle rank. Specific structural details of his service project were not formally released by the district.
Independent Study Quantifies the Lifelong Impact of Eagle Scouts
A century after New York’s Arthur Eldred made history as the nation's very first Eagle Scout in 1912, independent scientific research has confirmed the profound, positive footprint that these scouts leave on modern society. More than 2 million young men have climbed the ranks to Eagle Scout.
The Baylor University Findings
The academic study, titled Merit Beyond the Badges, was undertaken by the Baylor University Institute for Studies of Religion through its Program on Prosocial Behavior. According to the data, individuals who attained the Eagle Scout rank consistently outpaced non-scouts across several key categories.
