Texas Man Sentenced to Fifty Years in Prison For Stealing Fajitas
The Associated Press reports that a man from the Lone Star state received a pretty lengthy prison sentence for stealing fajitas.
Gilberto Escamilla, 53, was sentenced to 50 years in prison on April 20th after he pleaded guilty to stealing over $1.2 million worth of fajitas over a nine year period.
Escamila had been intercepting fajita meat that he ordered through the Cameron County Juvenile Center, then selling them to customers as if they were his own.
The scheme was exposed to the public when Escamila had to miss work due to a medical appointment. An 800-pound order of fajitas was sent to the center when Escamila wasn't there, and the order had nowhere to go to since the center doesn't serve fajitas.
Escamila was fired back in August, and also arrested after the authorities did research on vendor invoices. Authorities got a search warrant for Escamila's residence and found fajitas paid for by the county in his refrigerator.
In addition to the prison time, Escamilla was slapped with a $10,000 fine on top of the over $1.2 million he owes for the fajitas.
