Fort Hood Selected as Site for Prototype Nuclear Microreactor Under Army’s Project Janus
The Department of the Army chooses Fort Hood as one of five military bases across the country to host a prototype nuclear microreactor. The selection comes following a contract award to General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS).
Project Janus
The effort falls under Project Janus, a defense initiative executed alongside the Department of War Innovation Unit. The program accelerates the deployment of commercial, clean nuclear technologies into military installations to strengthen national security.
Boosting Base Resilience with Next-Generation Technology
Under the broader Janus Program, the Army is committing up to $2.2 billion to select vendors to design, construct, own, and operate as many as 10 prototype microreactors across chosen bases.
Fort Hood's General Atomics Tactical Energy System
The Fort Hood installation will test the General Atomics Tactical Energy System (GA-TES), a transportable, liquid-metal-cooled microreactor. The unit is perfect for Texas because it is designed to function in remote, harsh, or off-grid environments. The unit is modular, so it is easy to move around whether it be by train or truck, and it lasts for 40 years. The design relies on natural coolant circulation, eliminating primary pumps to minimize mechanical complexity.
