Tightened ID Requirements in Texas

You may not have heard about it last week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday hoopla, but the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles tightened ID requirements for vehicle registration and renewal last week. Those wishing to register or renew the registration on a vehicle but show valid ID that verifies they are legally in the Unites States.

What Led to the Change in Procedure?

The requirement followed social media posts by Midlothian State Rep. Brian Harrison that said his office had received reports of illegal immigrants being allowed to register vehicles. According to Fox 4 News,  Harrison also wrote a letter to Texas Governor Greg Abbott demanding action to prevent Illegal Immigrants from using American roads. The day after the social media posts, a DMV bulletin was issued to county tax offices.

Auto insurance rates are based on statistics. When auto crashes and auto thefts increase, car insurance rates go up as well. An example of increasing car insurance rates and illegal immigrants is found in Springfield, Ohio. In 2024, car insurance rates rose by about 30 percent following the importation of 20 thousand Haitians under the Biden Administration. Federal data also shows that monthly auto insurance rates rose by roughly 8.3 percent under President Trump, but by 20 percent under the Biden Administration’s Open Door immigration policy.
