Nothing is more fun and heartwarming than watching your little ones enjoy an early summer vacation during spring break. For many years my wife and I found fun places to take our eight children, including zoos, museums and more. Then we discovered indoor water parks.

The day we discovered our very first indoor water park, I think I heard it at least a hundred times. From each of the kids, my wife, and I believe I said it too (a couple of hundred times), "We'll never do anything else again - indoor water parks are the bomb!"

Indoor water parks are incredible because it doesn't matter what Mother Nature is doing outside we're having fun inside - still swimming, splashing, and cannonballing everyone in the park. The best part is most of these water parks are within a couple of hours' drive of Abilene.

Surprisingly enough, they're all affordable too. So make your reservations, pack the swimsuits, and get ready to go "spring breaking". Texas offers some fantastic water parks and pools for anyone looking to have a splashin’ good time, rain or shine. Here are a few worth checking out:

The WaterPark at The Villages

The WaterPark at The Villages in Flint features a relaxing, meandering river, a gentle wave pool, a forest-themed children’s playscape with water features, four water slides and two tower slides, a party room, a casual dining area, and a retail store.

Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark

In Grand Prairie, Epic Waters is an 80,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor year-round waterpark that offers a wealth of family fun. The park is home to 11 water slides set around the waterpark’s slide tower, as well as a 10,000-square-foot outdoor wave pool with calm surf gently lapping a tranquil beach and rolling soft waves. There is also a 600-foot lazy river and a swimming hole with basketball hoops.

Great Wolf Lodge

Located in Grapevine, featuring an 80,000-square-foot water park, the highlights at Great Wolf Lodge include the Howlin’ Tornado raft ride, Coyote Cannon water tubes with an incredible 40-foot drop, and a tree house fort with a 1,000-gallon tipping bucket. All hotel guests get exclusive access to the water park.

Schlitterbahn Island

Schlitterbahn means “slippery road” in German. It opened its first location in New Braunfels, then in the Texas Hill Country, in 1979. Now the chain consists of five parks throughout Texas, with the Galveston Island Park opening in 2006. Open year-round, this park features an indoor section called “Wasserfest” which boasts water slides, pools, a beach, a kids’ area, and a luxurious swim-up bar.
