Popular ‘Ice Cream’ Desserts, Not What You Think
In Texas we eat a lot of ice cream, Blue Bell almost has it’s own food group. The sweet and cold dessert is especially loved when we’re in the summer months and the heat is downright disrespectful. Although you might be grabbing for ice cream treats at the store that are not real ice cream.
Most of us know the difference between real ice cream and when you try one that tastes a little like chemicals, or the texture just tastes off.
Ice cream is one of those things that you don’t want to buy the cheap version as you will taste the difference. But there are some popular “ice cream” treats at the store that you probably don’t realize are not actually ice cream.
How Are Ice Cream Treats, Not Ice Cream?
As I found out from Food Republic, to be considered ice cream it must contain 10% milk fat from a dairy source, and 20% milk solids. Companies can create what is called frozen dairy desserts using oils, which are often found in products such as Drumsticks or Walmart’s brand of Great Value Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Name Brands Ice Creams Are the Real Deal
While you might pay a little more for Blue Bell or Haagen-Dazs compared to the off brands, you are getting real ice cream from the brand name companies. And to be honest, those are often on sale and very similar to the off-brand prices.
I used to love Drumsticks, but at the end of the day, I want to know I am eating ice cream, not frozen dairy dessert.
