Texas Newbies, Learn This 1 Thing Before Getting Here and You’ll Fit in Nicely
(Longview, Texas) - We like to get around fast in Texas. We also like to sit back and take in those special moments. It's something that anyone new to Texas will find odd. There's also some mannerisms about us that could be off-putting to a Texas newbie simply because they're not used to it.
Texas seems to be the rival for every state. Why? Some could say it's simple jealousy of the way we live. Others want the laid back but focused life we live. Others just can't get over that we're the home of America's Team even if they haven't won in three decades.
How We like to Live in Texas
Anyone who is native Texas, like myself, knows there is a certain respect given to others around us. One of those others is law enforcement. We know the extremely difficult job they have keeping us safe every day.
We also have a huge respect for our military and military veterans. We know the difficult job they endure protecting our country and the brothers and sisters they lost doing it. We also have a huge respect for our elders. There is a knowledge and wisdom they can pass down to us on a daily basis to make us a better person.

Manners and How We Use Them
I'll be completely honest here, if you run across someone who doesn't have any, or even the best, manners, they are most likely not from here. Every morning I stop at QuikTrip in Lindale for my morning coke refill as I'm heading to the station. As I'm walking in or out, if there is someone else going in or out, doesn't matter if it's a man or woman, I hold the door for them.
That's followed by a simple "thank you" and we move on. That's manners. There's also saying "yes ma'am" or "no sir." Newbies to Texas, we're not calling you old, which many of you believe. We are simply replying to you in a respectful manner.
Other Manners We've Learned Over the Years
When we hold a door open for you, we don't believe you're incapable, we consider it being polite and helpful. When we wave at you, that is our "thank you" because we can't say it or we're in a spot where you won't be able to hear it. A simple wave back is the "you're welcome."
Texas newbies, learn that our manners are not an insult. They are a symbol of respect for each other in our neck of the woods. Learn it and embrace it, it will make your transition here so much better.
