Looking Back at the History of the Dallas Mavericks Ownership
With rumors circulating that the Dallas Mavericks could sell again. Let's take a look back at the basketball team in Big D's ownership.
Don't believe everything you see online, but this rumor has been growing in just under a day that the Dallas Mavericks could be sold again in just under three years. The reason? That Dallas casino that current Mavericks ownership wants is not coming and talks of a Las Vegas expansion team may sound more appealing to them. We will wait and see what they decide to do. Let's see everyone who has been a majority owner of this team.
1980 - Donald Carter for 12 Million Dollars
Donald was the man that helped Dallas get an NBA team. He held a percentage of the Dallas Mavericks until his death in 2018. You may remember, he was the first to hoist the NBA Finals trophy in 2011 from NBA Commissioner David Stern. Donald attended Dallas Mavericks games all the time before his death and fans would always recognize him for his giant cowboy hat.
1996 - Ross Perot Jr. for 125 Million Dollars
Currently the shortest tenured majority ownership period of the Dallas Mavericks is the ownership group lead by Ross Perot Jr. Allegedly former owner Donald Carter did not want to be the one to fire head coach Dick Motta since they were friends. He thought it would be easier to sell the team and have that new owner make the decision. Which did happen upon the sale. Dick would remain with the Dallas Mavericks as an advisor after the new ownership group took over.
2000 - Mark Cuban for 285 Million Dollars
Long time Dallas Mavericks season ticket holder Mark Cuban would purchase the majority rights after hitting it big with his sale of Broadcast.com. Mark had the most successful run as any Dallas Mavericks owner. 18 playoff berths, a championship, and a winning record.
2023 - Miriam Adelson for $3.5 Billion Dollars
Gone are the days of winning the lottery and potentially buying your favorite sports team. You need to be another level of rich nowadays. The owner of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, Miriam Adelson bought the Mavericks just three years ago. Her son in law Patrick Dumont is the governor of the team, but Miriam is the head boss.
We will wait and see what the future holds for Dallas Mavericks ownership, but since the Luka trade. Many are not happy with the way things have been handled.
